EST 2020

Across the January 2026 long weekend, Awesome Black presented the inaugural Maito Weekender as part of our collaboration as the First Nations Creative Connector for the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner.
The brief was to bring a vibrant showcase of music and culture with crowds en masse to the regional centre of Maitland, supporting the local economy and providing a free experience for festival-lovers from near and far.
Featuring 20 performances and workshops in the heart of Maitland at The Family Hotel, the lineup included BARKAA, Lemonise, Yung Brother and more, with 1,300 attendees packing the venue from day to night.

A live performance meets cultural statement — blending hip hop, theatre and visual art to tell the story of a community through sound.
It began as an idea: what would happen if a Redfern house party became a live performance and a pirate radio broadcast all at once?
Created and directed by Awesome Black, the project premiered at Carriageworks for Vivid Sydney 2025.

From the Awesome Black Lounge and live showcases like Louder to keynote conversations and workshops, our curatorial direction threads culture through every part of the program — not as inclusion, but as foundation.
