Don’t Lose Me in the Crowd

Blak Label are doing a lot of things right and Denzel Kennedy is a stand out among the Blak Label line up. Travis reviews Denzel Kennedy’s new EP lost in the crowd.

In Denzel’s new EP, we are treated to four tracks, among which “Sing for Me” and “Who Got It” were pre-released as standalone singles.

If you’re not already familiar with Kennedy’s work, you’re missing out. His previous album, ‘Devote Ur Heart,’ was a young man’s sentimentaljourney through love and lust, dripping with metaphor that is well worth a listen.

This EP departs from the sweetness of his early work, presenting a transformed, more mature, yet upbeat lyrical journey. It’s filled with witty and loud stories over incredibly well-crafted, pared-back beats by Franciis.

In Denzel’s own words, “I wrote ‘Lost inthe Crowd’ in between major projects to signal a transition of some sort. Not just as a person but as an artist too.” This indeed feels like a transition, akin to a math student showing their work instead of just providing the answer. On each track of the EP, Denzel effortlessly weaves stories, showcasing his ability to defy genres and connect with the listener at the core. We are invited into Denzel’s world.

The entire EP is undoubtedly worth listening to, and following Denzel Kennedy on Instagram and TikTok is recommended. Observing his freestyle work there provides more context to his process and offers hints about where he may be heading.

One criticism I have is that I wanted more. I’m not personally the biggest fan of the freestyle track “Who Got It?,” preferring the more crafted storytelling in “Quarterback” and “ijustwannadance.” On an album-length work, this wouldn’t matter as much, as it would be a track within a larger body of work. However, on this EP, it stands out as the final track before my music player or streaming platform throws me into the algorithm of similar artists. I would have placed it straight after the interlude and ended with the previously released “Sing for Me,” but as criticisms go, this is minor. I, for one, trust in Denzel Kennedy.
