Overview
On October 18th, Awesome Black proudly curated a unique showcase for the Sounds Australia India Delegation atop the Paramount Building in Sydney. This intimate rooftop event brought together a mix of First Nations artists, community members, and industry partners, creating a vibrant cultural exchange that celebrated the power of First Nations contemporary music on a world stage.
Our Role
Partnering with Sounds Australia, we crafted an experience that highlighted the depth and diversity of First Nations contemporary culture with a focus on NSW based artists. We curated a lineup of extraordinary First Nations artists—Dyagula, Eric Avery, Akala Newman, and Nidala—each performing original work in their traditional languages. Our team oversaw the show’s curation and direction, ensuring an atmosphere that was both impactful and deeply respectful of the artists’ cultural expressions.
Key Highlights
- Artist Performances: Each performer brought their unique perspective to the evening, creating a rich tapestry of language, music, and tradition. Dyagula’s powerful storytelling, Eric Avery’s stirring violin compositions, Akala Newman’s hauntingly beautiful vocals over deep beats, and Nidala’s soulful presence all contributed to a captivating night.
- Celebration of Language: With each performance delivered in a mix of English and traditional Indigenous language, the showcase became a powerful reminder of the importance of language preservation and its connection to identity. The audience—an inspiring mix of First Nations community members and international industry representatives—witnessed firsthand the resilience and innovation within First Nations contemporary music.
- International Cultural Exchange: Partnering with Sounds Australia allowed us to present First Nations culture to a global audience, fostering meaningful connections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures and positioning these artists as voices of influence on the world stage.
Outcome
The showcase not only deepened cultural ties between Australia’s First Nations communities and the international music industry but also highlighted the strength, beauty, and resilience of First Nations artists. This event served as a powerful reminder that contemporary First Nations culture is vibrant, globally relevant, and evolving in ways that resonate far beyond Australian shores. Through our collaboration with Sounds Australia, Awesome Black continues to champion the visibility and influence of First Nations voices in the music industry worldwide.
