Blak List is your monthly journey through the exciting world of Blak music and the Blak Loud playlist on Amazon Music. Huge thanks to Amazon Music for their continued support of this curation by the Awesome Black team.
In this edition of the Blak Loud playlist we are looking at some new tracks from the Uncle of Blak Music: Troy Cassar-Daley & listening to new artistic work from our big favorite, friend of Awesome Black: Mr Rhodes.
Of course as always this month we have 50 tracks for you all from First Nations artists ready for your listening pleasure, dive in, plug in your aux chord and listen while we tell you all about this month’s playlist.
Let’s dive into the top tracks for May 2024.
Troy Cassar-Daley – “Someday”
Troy Cassar-Daley returns with a whole album, potentially one of the best of his career (and an album we’ll be deep diving on in a follow up to this article). “Someday,” is a heartfelt track among big tracks that showcases his exceptional songwriting and powerful voice. Known for his ability to weave personal themes seamlessly with the universal experiences, Troy’s new song continues in his tradition of being brutally honest with his music. “Someday” is a testament to his enduring talent and the emotional depth that has made him a beloved figure in Blak music.
Jungajii – “Renaissance Rambler”
I’m a huge fan of this. Getting to see the resurgence of Troy Brady under the moniker Jungajii and following his incredible story has been a proud moment for me in the Blak music industry and as a friend of Troys.
Jungajii’s “Renaissance Rambler” takes listeners on a journey through rich storytelling and vibrant melodies. Troy’s opening poem is honest and takes you into his world. This track captures the essence of rebirth and exploration, blending big band sounds with contemporary RnB style. Jungaji’s unique style and evocative lyrics make “Renaissance Rambler” a standout track that truly celebrates Troy Brady’s incredible career.
Maanyung – “Bilwaali (Home)”
What an absolute star. Maanyung is going from strength to strength in his music trajectory. “Bilwaali (Home)” by Maanyung is a beautiful ode to the concept of home and belonging. With its soothing rhythms and cultural lyrics, the track offers a profound sense of connection to the land and heritage that I can feel even if I don’t understand. Maanyung’s emotive performance and melodic arrangements create a captivating listening experience that speaks to the soul. If you liked Jonsi, Sigur Ros or others in that tradition be sure to check out and follow along with whatever Maanyung brings out in the future. We are truly lucky to be treated to this kind of work.
South Summit – “Givin’ it up”
South Summit brings an infectious, reggae energy with “Givin’ it Up,” a track that combines catchy beats with poetic layers of lyrics. This song is potentially a new high for South Summit, as they keep growing and building on their previous work. South Summit’s dynamic delivery and upbeat production make “Givin’ it up” a must have in your rotation.
Mr Rhodes – “The World is Mine”
I can never get enough of Mr Rhodes. He keeps playing and keep experimenting with both his sound and the way he releases tracks. Blake has been on the grind for years and the bro deserves some flowers… Mr Rhodes rounds out the first five track’s of this month’s list with “The World is Mine,” a powerful declaration of self-confidence and ambition. With its playful tongue in cheek yet powerful lyrics and strong beats, this track is an anthem for those who dare to dream big and claim their place in the world. I know that sounds cliche but I ain’t lying. Mr Rhodes’s commanding presence and playful, lyrical prowess shine through, making this song a must-listen. Also if you want to see some incredible art, please check out what Mr Rhodes, the content king himself has been doing over on his Instagram account to help promo the track. Huge congrats Mr Rhodes.
