Blak List Vol 16: I am One Hundred Percent about 3%

Blak List Vol. 16: A couple of brand new releases from Barkaa and Emily Wurramara & new track Land Back by Blakfulla supergroup 3% that hits hard.

Wallami fam!

Blak List is your monthly journey through the exciting world of Blak music and the Blak Loud playlist on Amazon Music. Huge thanks to Amazon Music for their continued support of this curation by the Awesome Black team.

In this edition of the Blak Loud playlist we are looking at some new tracks and exploring the back catalogue of the solo artists that have formed the Blakfulla supergroup; 3%.

Of course as always this month we have 50 tracks for you all from First Nations artists ready for your listening pleasure.

Let’s talk new music! This last month has been pretty chock full of new releases and big things happening in the Blakfulla indie scene.

3% feat. Say True God? & DENNI – Land Back

“Land Back,” the third installment in a series of singles released by the collaboration between Nooky, Dallas Woods, and Angus Field over the past few months, continues to build on the momentum created by its predecessors. This track seamlessly blends elements of political rap, protest anthems, and underground beats, showcasing the diverse talents of the artists involved. Lutruwita artist Denni’s guest verse adds depth to the song, offering a powerful counterpoint to the warrior chants laid down by the main artists. However, make no mistake—Denni brings just as much intensity to the track. Following the success of their debut single “OUR PEOPLE,” which was my personal choice for track of the year in 2023, “Land Back” maintains the same level of impact. It’s an honor to feature 3% as our standout artist this month, and I couldn’t be more excited about the energy they bring to the Blak music scene.

Barkaa – We Up

In recent months, we’ve witnessed a striking aesthetic transformation in the matriarch of Blak hip-hop, marked by her adoption of a new heavy metal-inspired logo and collaboration on a merch line with Nadine Chemali of ThrillHouse Tattoo. Now, with the debut of “We Up,” we’re treated to fresh artwork courtesy of Coffinbirth for this single. The impact of this track is undeniable; Barkaa’s evolution as an artist is both evident and captivating. While she has always embodied strength and conviction, her latest work showcases a newfound maturity in her lyrics that remain deeply rooted in her cultural heritage. Barkaa continues to ascend to greater artistic heights with each release, solidifying her position as a powerhouse in the music industry.

Emily Wurramara – Midnight Blues

Emily Wurramara follows up her first new single since 2022 (Magic Woman Dancing) with a vulnerability filled ballad Midnight Blues. This is a beautifully dark new direction for Wurramara where she lyrically explores her struggles with postpartum depression, alcohol abuse and suicide attempts. We’re incredibly lucky to have artists like this in our space, articulating these heavy subjects and Emily has done so with incredible depth.

We could never say it better than she could herself “It’s precious to show people why this life is beautiful and worth sticking around for; being vulnerable in itself has so much strength and staunchness. I want to help people to release, cry, and let it out – this is normal because we live in a fucked up society, of course we feel shit – I want Midnight Blues to be a safe space to feel.”

Other notable new tracks from Yung Milla, Boox Kid, Kaybee & ChillCheney are in the playlist.

The rest of the playlist features a heavy exploration of Nooky and Dallas Woods solo projects and previous collaborations, as well as Angus Field’s other band Aya J. We’re going to be talking you through this in a couple of weeks in a 3% history article – look out for that!

Also keep an eye out for some brand new drops to be added to the playlist as they come out.  Make sure to keep the playlist in rotation to stay up to date with all the hottest new Blak music, curated by Awesome Black.
